EMPOWERED by MSU

In the summer of 2013 I started a new chapter in the book of life. I began the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program (MAET) in Galway, Ireland.  Our three children were grown. I had the time, money, and passion to go back to school. This was my opportunity to learn the latest in education technology from one of the finest institutions in the United States.

My initial goals were the same as they are today: make videos, create websites, earn my Educational Technology Certificate and enjoy a month in Ireland with my son, Ben. We were both starting our MAET journey together. My wife, an MAET graduate, had encouraged us to become MAET graduates. So as I said good-bye to my wife, I thought to myself, "How will I fit in? Can I, a digital immigrant, adapt to a class full of digital natives?" I was apprehensive knowing their skills and my skills were different. How would I fare with these students that were less than half my age?

The first summer was a steep learning curve. Things moved fast for a man in his 60’s. I faced many frustrations learning new technology at a quick pace and completing the difficult assignments on time. It was very stressful. Being around my son and others who had faith and gave constant encouragement helped me succeed. I observed, explored, and worked in collaborative groups. These methods helped me learn quickly. As I left Ireland, I was not sure I would continue in the program. I was not comfortable being the slow learner in this class. I did earned my Educational Technology Certificate.

The second year was more manageable. I had a successful year two in Galway. My skills had improved from year one. Classmates knew my abilities and limitations, and I knew theirs. We were becoming a team that accepted each other and our varied skill sets. Having the time to explore Ireland on the weekends and participating in activities outside the classroom allowed us to see each other in a different light. By the end of year two I became proficient making videos with Camtasia and had many websites online. My goal to earn my masters degree from Michigan State University (MSU) was in my sight.

Being a graduate student at MSU has allowed me to have many new experiences and has given me the confidence to share my knowledge with others. Now I am in the final semester of this journey. All my goals that I had at the beginning have been met except one. On May 6, 2016, my last goal will be achieved. I will be a MAET graduate of Michigan State University!

I am sixty-three years of age. In three years I plan to retire from this job and return to my family in Iowa. My wife and I have been away for almost twenty years. I have been an international educator and a life long learner in technology. This portfolio summarizes my journey. Once I return to Iowa, I will search for my next adventure. I have been empowered by MSU. Who knows what challenges and opportunities are still ahead?
